About IIT Delhi

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) is a public research institute established in 1961 and inaugurated by Humayun Kabir, the Minister of Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs at the time. The Institutes of Technology Amendment Act, 1963 declared the institute as an Institute of National Importance and granted it the status of a full university, granting it the authority to establish its academic policies, administer its examinations, and award its degrees.

 IITD provides a Bachelor of Technology in nine subject areas, including Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mathematics and Computing, Mechanical Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, and Textile Technology. Additionally, the university offers dual programs that integrate undergraduate and graduate degrees, along with other graduate programs in its diverse departments and centers. According to the 2023 NIRF Ranking, IIT Delhi  ranks “2” in engineering and “3” overall. Furthermore, IIT Delhi’s ranking in the QS World University Ranking 2025 has moved up 47 places, from 197 to 150.

IIT Delhi Campus

The main campus of IIT Delhi is located in Hauz Khas, South Delhi, along with two satellite campuses in Sonipat and Jhajjar. Enclosed by the Hauz Khas area and notable landmarks like the Qutb Minar and Lotus Temple, the campus spans 325 acres (132 ha). Additionally, it is situated near other educational institutions such as Jawaharlal Nehru University, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, International Management Institute, New Delhi, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, National Institute of Fashion Technology, National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), and Indian Statistical Institute.

The IIT-D campus is segmented into four areas:

  1. Living area for students
  2. Living area for faculty and staff
  3. Recreational area for students, which encompasses the Student Activity Center (SAC), football stadium, cricket ground, basketball courts, hockey field, lawn tennis courts, and swimming pool
  4. Academic area including department offices, lecture theatres, Central Library, and workshops.

The student residential section comprises 14 student hostels, each named after the mountain ranges of India. It is further divided into two main sectors – one for the 11 boys’ hostels and another for the 3 girls’ hostels.

  • IIT Delhi placements for 2024 (batch graduating in 2024) have been partially conducted as of July 23, 2024. Here’s what we know so far based on media reports (as of July 23, 2024):

    Phase 1: A successful Phase 1 has been reported with over 1,000 students receiving job offers (including pre-placement offers) and a total of 1,050 placement offers made.

    International Offers: More than 50 international offers were received from around 20 international companies during Phase 1.

    Top Recruiters: Some of the top recruiters during Phase 1 included Microsoft, Air India, Texas Instruments, Bajaj Auto, Goldman Sachs, and Ola Electric.
