About Jamia Millia Islamia

Jamia Millia Islamia is a central university located in New Delhi, India. It was established in 1920 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, and later shifted to its present location in Okhla, Delhi, in 1935. The university was founded by a group of scholars and activists, namely Mahmud Hasan Deobandi, Muhammad Ali Jauhar, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Zakir Hussain, Mahatma Gandhi, Allama Iqbal, Abdul Majeed Khwaja and Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari. Its foundation stone was laid by Mahmud Hasan Deobandi, an Islamic scholar and activist of the Indian independence movement. The university was established as a national institution that would offer progressive education and an emphasis on Indian nationalism to students from all communities, particularly Muslims. It was supported by Mahatma Gandhi, who felt that Jamia Millia Islamia could shape lives of students on the basis of a shared culture and worldview.  Jamia Millia Islamia was given the deemed status by the University Grants Commission in 1962 and later on attained the status of a central university through an act of the Indian parliament in 1988. In 2020, Jamia Millia Islamia received an ‘A++’ ranking by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and was ranked 1st among all central universities in the country in rankings released by Ministry of Education Of India. This university has faced several challenges in its history, which include financial difficulties, political interference, and student protests. However, it has continued to grow and develop, and now it is one of the prestigious universities in India.

Jamia Millia Islamia Campus

Jamia Millia Islamia is spread over a large area in the Okhla region of Delhi. The university boasts a cricket ground, the Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi Sports Complex, which has hosted numerous tournaments like Indian women’s cricket matches and the University Cricket Championship in 2013. The campus has several centers of learning and research, such as the Anwar Jamal Kidwai Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC), Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Faculty of Fine Arts, Centre for Theoretical Physics, and the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Academy of   International Studies. In line with its commitment to green Campaign, Jamia Millia Islamia has installed 2,250-kilowatt solar panels on campus.  

Sports and Facilities

Jamia has a rich sporting tradition, with its first gold and silver medals in wrestling being won in 1977 at the All India Inter University Championship. The campus regularly hosts Ranji Trophy and Vijaya Trophy matches, Women’s Cricket Test matches, Women’s World Cup matches, and Blind’s Cricket World Cup matches. The sports complex has facilities for cricket, football, tennis, volleyball, badminton, basketball, athletics, table tennis, yoga, snooker, and hockey. There’s also a gymnasium and indoor games stadium.

Library

The university library system consist of over 6 lakhs books, 2230rare manuscripts, subject specific books, Urdu book collections. The library also has a digital resource center with 100 workstations as a gateway for online resources and 200 computers for students.

Health Facilities

The university provides free healthcare services to its students, faculty, and staff through Ansari Health Centre, Faculty of Dentistry, Centre for Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Services, and  Unani Pharmacy.

Admission Process

Application Process (Online):

Visit the JMI Admission Portal: https://jmicoe.in/  
  1. Click “Admissions” and choose your program.
  2. Register with your basic information (name, qualifications, contact details).
  3. Upload your photograph and signature.
  4. Verify your email using the link sent after registration.
  5. Login and apply for your desired program(s).
  6. Pay the application fee (INR 700 for most programs, INR 500 for BTech & BArch).
  7. Submit the application form and download a copy for reference.
  8. Track your application status on the JMI website.
 
Selection Criteria:
  1. Entrance exams conducted by JMI (most programs)
  2. National-level exams: JEE Main (BTech), NATA (B.Arch), NEET (BDS)
  3. CUET scores (specific BA Hons, BSc Hons, BVoc programs)
 
Results:
  1. Announced on the JMI website for semester exams and entrance tests.

Jamia Millia Islamia Hostel Accommodation

Boys' Hostels

Jamia houses male students in seven hostels: Fazalur Rahman Khan, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Sir A.M. Khwaja, Allama Iqbal, E.J. Kellat, Shafiqur Rehman Kidwai, and Obaidullah Sindhi. These hostels accommodate students in both 3-seater and 4-seater rooms.

Girls' Hostels

Female students are accommodated in five hostels: Gerda Philipsborn, Aruna Asaf Ali, Begum Anis Kidwai, Bi Amma, and Bi Amma Annexe. Similar to the boys’ hostels, these facilities offer both 3-seater and 4-seater rooms.
